Metabolic Health and Aging

As we age, our bodies undergo numerous changes that can influence our overall well-being. One of the key factors that plays a significant role in determining how we age is metabolic health. Metabolic health is often overlooked but is a crucial component that can influence the quality of our lives as we age.

What is Metabolic Health?

Metabolism is the intricate network of chemical reactions that occur within our cells to sustain life. It encompasses processes like energy production, nutrient utilization, and waste elimination. The intricate balance of metabolic activities is fundamental to maintaining optimal health. However, as we age, our metabolism undergoes changes that can lead to various health challenges.

Impact of Aging on Metabolism

Aging is associated with a decline in metabolic health, which can result in a range of health issues. There are five important aspects to metabolic health: blood sugar, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Food, exercise, genes, sleep, stress, and gut health all have an impact on our unique metabolic health. As we age one of the most notable changes is a decrease in basal metabolic rate (BMR), the amount of energy the body expends at rest. This can contribute to weight gain and a higher risk of obesity, which in turn are linked to chronic disease. It’s important that we take care of our metabolism by making sure our bodies can properly digest our food and process important nutrients without causing blood sugar spikes and reducing inflammation. When our metabolic systems function optimally, we are better equipped to ward off chronic diseases, maintain a healthy weight, and preserve muscle mass and bone density.

Ways to improve Metabolic Health:

Eat healthy:

Consuming a nutrient-rich, well-balanced diet is crucial for maintaining metabolic health. Focus on whole foods, including lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. Minimize processed foods, sugary snacks, refined carbohydrates and focus more on healthier home-cooked meals. Make sure to eat breakfast as this steadies blood sugar levels and gives your body sustained energy. Skipping meals is not advised, it’s best to eat at least 3 balanced meals a day.

Exercise:

Regular exercise has a profound impact on metabolism. Engaging in both cardiovascular exercises and strength training can help increase muscle mass, boost BMR, and enhance insulin sensitivity. Exercise is very important for bone density as we age, it also increases strength and boosts our metabolism. So, as we get older it's crucial that we move our bodies for metabolic health.

Sleep:

Poor sleep patterns can disrupt metabolic processes and lead to insulin resistance. Prioritize getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support metabolic function.

Stress:

Chronic stress can negatively affect metabolism. When we are stressed there is a decreased function from our digestive system and our nervous system is put into fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system). This slows down our metabolism, which in turn can age us quicker. Incorporate stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga into your routine to support overall metabolic health.

Hydration:

Staying adequately hydrated is essential for metabolic processes, as water is involved in numerous chemical reactions within the body. So, stay hydrated and drink at least 8 glasses of water a day!

Regular Health Screenings:

Regular check-ups with healthcare professionals can help monitor key metabolic indicators like blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure, allowing for early detection and intervention.

By adopting a holistic approach that focuses on a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and other lifestyle choices, you can enhance your metabolic health and enjoy a higher quality of life as you age.

HEY, I’M MARINA

I had to go through many ups and downs to heal. It took me a long time to get there, it was a process, it didn't happen overnight. I had to learn that caffeine was a big 'no no' in my body and was the cause of a lot of my issues. I had to learn to put myself first and create self-love before I could finally heal. It really was a combination of mind, body and spirit that really helped me heal. And that's what I teach. I want you to heal in every way! I want you to feel the best you've ever felt! I want you to have all the things that you want in your life! And I want you to heal, so you can live the life of your dreams! Welcome to yourself! I greet you where you are!
